Pomfret Fire Department Training Complex

Currently with fewer and fewer fires it takes an average of almost 10 years for a firefighter to gain real life experience in fighting fires.  The Pomfret Fire Department wanted to speed up that process and give our firefighters the "experience" of real-time, real life fire fighting to help protect and serve the town.  In 2008 many members from the Pomfret, Putnam, East Putnam Fire Departments worked together for endless hours building this facility.  It consists of a live fire burn area, a section with over 120’ of maze to crawl through in the pitch dark, and a second story so that we can simulate going down into a basement fire or searching the 2nd floor for possible victims.  We can also practice laddering a building and other 2nd story evolutions.  By training its members in a controlled environment in our own backyard, it allows our members to gain the experience and training needed to protect our town and surrounding towns. Prior to this facility, firefighters had to use a building that was donated to the fire department for training or they had to travel to Windsor Locks or Auburn,Mass to drill with a similar facility.  Our training facility is open to all fire departments to use for a nominal fee to recoup some of the building costs.
