Pomfret Fire Department

The Pomfret Fire department was established in 1934. In order to start the department, a few of the charter members actually put their houses up as collateral. Originally, the fire department had two stations, one in a barn across from X-tra Mart and one in a barn across from Rucky's General store.

These two buildings housed the only two trucks that the department had at that time. The first fire truck owned by the fire department was a converted Cadillac since there were very few manufacturers of fire apparatus at the time. The first rescue vehicle in the department was a 1946 Ford Panel truck.

On October 2, 1978, the Pomfret Fire Department moved to its current location on RT 97, near the intersection of Hampton Rd and Deerfield Rd. This move put all of the apparatus in one location, and also put the station itself within a couple hundred yards of the geographical center of town.
